Doodoo Limitations

One badly pronounced airline term is all it takes to send this episode completely off the rails. What begins as a serious explanation of pilot and flight attendant duty limitations quickly becomes “doodoo limitations”—and, naturally, we never recover.

First, we follow up on the passenger accused of slapping a flight attendant and facing serious federal consequences. That leads to an important reminder: keep your hands to yourself on an airplane. We also talk about how dramatically workplace boundaries have changed during our careers—and how even a seemingly innocent galley conversation can turn into a major problem.

Then G raids Shawn’s backyard for plants, discovers that carrying dirt uphill is apparently an extreme sport after a certain age, and uncovers some questionable stories involving flowers, deer and a few unfortunate Ohio rabbits.

Back in the aviation world, we explain why a flight can taxi all the way to the runway and still return to the gate because the pilots have reached their legal duty limit. We break down the difference between pilot and flight attendant legalities, why one minute can matter and why the crew cannot simply “make an exception” because everyone wants to get home.

We also react to an incredible educator teaching children how to behave on an airplane, discuss the value of volunteering, reflect on devastating earthquake footage from the Philippines and revisit Shawn’s early travel memories of Manila—including jeepneys, waterways, poverty, generosity and a red-light-district story that probably deserves its own episode.

From there, we meet a passenger who snores through the airport, the entire flight and nearly his own destination; Shawn unexpectedly reunites with a flight attendant classmate after 36 years; and one unforgettable New York couple turns a simple meal order into a full theatrical production.

Add in international food adventures, traveler’s diarrhea, fresh eel, an Aldi ahi-tuna discovery, two very different viral college baseball moments and a Japanese airline scandal that resulted in executive pay cuts and thousands of flight attendants losing their layover drinking privileges.

It is aviation education, questionable food choices, passenger chaos and completely unnecessary backyard confessions—all pressurized into one episode.

Cold Open And Button Duty

Shawn

I'm just laughing because I get to push the button today. See, a lot of people don't even know that you're the button pusher and I got to push the button today. I'm always pushing buttons. I know you are. That's all you do is push buttons. Shit, we're gonna do a follow-up. We're gonna do a follow-up of a flight, and then we're gonna get into the back of your yard and me cleaning the shit up in the back of your yard that that guy with $4,000 wanted to do. You say you're cleaning it up? No, I did. No, you know I did. Shit, I cut a lot of that shit out. Don't even sit there and say that. But no, we're gonna get we're gonna get back to that, dude. We're getting back to that. All right.

Passenger Charged For Touching Crew

Shawn

The follow-up. Do you remember that flight that diverted and the flight attendant got smacked on the rear end by by a passenger? Yeah. Okay, so the follow-up was they just charged this guy in federal co court for interference with a crew member's duty. Damn. What's his punishment?

G

He's looking at 20 years. Whoa. 20 years. You know, I'm thinking that would be like an appropriate, like, I think you had this progressive judge out there. You know this fucking like slapping contest. Yeah. Get one of those motherfuckers and be like, yeah.

Shawn

Yeah, but just You get 20 slaps, bitch. I mean, you think of this. But they held Sean, they held this dude over.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, dude.

Shawn

I mean, they're I mean, it wasn't even like he he got a pr uh um a fine and and got bailed out. Yeah. They're holding his ass over. So now for slapping her on the rear end, he's going, he's gonna face 20 years. Now, could you imagine going to prison for 20 years and and they ask you why you in here? Think about that.

G

Somebody's gonna be slapping his ass for the next 20 years.

Shawn

What you in here for?

G

Uh I I slapped a flight attendant. No, I was Oh, you in the slapping flight attendant. Exactly. I was slapping somebody's back saying we're gonna slap some shit boy.

Shawn

You're in here for the wrong thing, man.

G

Or the right thing. Yeah, we're gonna we're gonna teach you a lesson. You don't slap people. We slap people.

Shawn

Ain't no slapping going on here. No, I thought you'd get a kick out of that one.

G

Right, hell yeah. Shoot, but that's so messed up, man. Like people, I you shouldn't be touching flight attendants. No touchy touchy of the nice flight attendant. And you shouldn't be fucking slapping, yeah, like slapping a girl on the ass. I mean, I gotta tell you a story. This is hilarious. So we're my wife and her sister are very similar in size and shape, and from behind, and back in the day, especially, you couldn't tell them apart, right? So we were going to like Cedar Point, and my sister-in-law goes to climb into the car, and I think it's Carol, and she like bends over, and I take this big ass hand here. Bam! I mean, and she like lurches forward, you know, and she's like, I'm not Carol.

Shawn

I'm like, oh Daddy, can I have another?

SPEAKER_02

You had that moment, and she's but how she did it the whole thing was like, I'm not Carol.

Shawn

Ow. And that moment in your gut, it just sank, right?

G

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I took a whole handful. I was like, oh bam. You like and she like her, like you know, one cheek I put it in my whole hand. Yep. Don't touch the flight attendants.

Workplace Boundaries And The Sushi Trap

Shawn

These are the things that we do. Don't touch the flight attendants. Don't slaughter. That's like the biggest pet peeve. Even in the work, I'm still laughing at you just laughing her ass. Um, but in the work in our in our work environment, we don't touch each other at all. Even even in conversation.

G

No.

Shawn

And for passengers, I mean, this is a this is a big heads up because this could be you. You you touch the wrong person, and next thing you know, you're accused of something.

G

Dude, our environment right now is so changed from when we started. Like when we started flight attendants, like it was it was anything goes. You could say anything, you could do anything, like it was just there was no sexual harassment back then.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and now, dude, I mean, you have to watch yourself. Someone just got fired. Yeah, you're gonna you won't believe what they got fired over.

G

They were having a conversation in the galley and they're going to a destination. And this dude, he's an Asian dude. Yeah, he looks at this new hire light attendant and is like, you know, um, so do you like sushi? She turned him in. You're like, what? She turned him in. Because I guess asking a girl if they like sushi is like, do you like to eat what? Right. Are you serious? And so they fired a dude. That makes no sense. Exactly. Like, like sushi is supposed to be the connotation to pussy, right? So it's like, you're like, what? I'm like, are you kidding me? The context of the conversation, and it's he said, she said, you know.

Shawn

I mean, I can understand in the galley if if if someone's having inappropriate conversation. Absolutely. I can understand right, right, right. I mean, sometimes you know, people people get a little bit out of sorts and you're like, it was like a history or lead up to it. Right, right. And we're like reel it in. Right, right, we're not going to be able to do that. I mean, we're gonna be the first to reel it in because we're like, hey, listen, because anybody that's been on those planes for any length of time, any of us, knows minimum, right, minimum, six rows up. Yeah, right? Yeah, yeah. I mean, you can hear you can hear you can hear people's voices six rows up. Right. You can hear mine all over the place. You can hear yours about 15 exit row, possibly. Right. And the way that you go through with headsets, 20.

G

Easily. There's no make sure they can they can see me, hear me. Exactly. They're like, what the hell is that? And if you I see you with your headphones on or something, I just get louder. Tune in.

Shawn

That's you. Just tune in. No, but seriously, that I mean, you know, it's exactly right, but they have inappropriate conversations and they get in trouble for that.

G

Yeah.

Shawn

But touching a crew member is off limits. Definitely, definitely, definitely don't do

Backyard Plant Haul And Cramps

Shawn

it. Now, now I'm gonna tell you about coming over to your house and cleaning out all your damn plants off the back. You're traumatized. Oh shit. Dude, let me check.

G

You got some free plants.

Shawn

I did, but I was I was dying. I you you know, I started realizing my age, though. No, I did. I started realizing my age. So I told you I was going down there, I was cleaning these damn things out, putting them in a laundry basket, carrying them up that frickin' hill. Now, dude, you got a hill like this.

G

Transplanting my plants from my backyard to his house, and then Because you're gonna kill him. Yeah, you don't re you don't realize like my house, like I have a walkout basement, so I have these like inclines. Two of them both both sides of the there's this it's a nice little hill.

Shawn

Nice little hill. It's an incline. Now, now add that you're carrying like 40 to 50 pounds of dirt. Dude, I've with the I've lived here for 26 years. I've been doing this, but I I was climbing up there and I kept going in and out of the car, in and out of the car. And dude, your neighbors were all looking at me. Yeah, they were looking at me, and I was like, Oh, please just come over and ask me what I'm doing.

G

We're in high alert neighborhood watching.

Shawn

No, ask me what I one of them asked me what I was doing. Yeah, they're like, Do you know Sean and Carol? Uh nope. I was gonna go, nope. But man, they got some overgrowing uh perennials back there. I was just I I thought it'd just take some starters. Yeah. I heard he's doing some work and I was just gonna take some. Exactly. I start digging all your shit out, and they'll be like, uh, police are coming. You're right. Right? Oh, they wouldn't.

G

This neighborhood wouldn't tell you the police is coming. You would just see a bit roll up.

Shawn

I yeah, you you find me in Madina jail, man. I'd be like my hands behind my back. No, the night that that night, this uh when you get old. So I went home, took a shower. I put I transplanted all that shit too. So you did it that night? Yeah, I did it that night. So I went transplanted, watered it, got to bed. You were sore as sh. No, let me tell you. My legs started cramping so bad. I mean, to where it's drink water. I was drinking water. It had nothing to do with water. It had to do with your incline. It had to do with your damn incline because I was walking up. I went to the gym for like two hours that morning. I started over coming over your house, walking that damn incline, and I'm like, man, this is a freaking workout. I'm going up and down, up and down, I'm cleaning us. And then the last time I'm sitting there, you know that last one? Yeah, you look like that that laugh dude like dredging up that hill and going up there. So, no, when I got in bed, my the shit started cramping up so bad. You know how it just locks up everything? So then my hands.

G

Oh, you were getting cramps in your hands, yeah.

Shawn

My gums locked up, and and all of a sudden they wouldn't move. Yeah, I'm like, what the hell? I'm old. I know that. I know that.

G

You're old, brother. But I my shit was locked up, dude. We can't do the shit that we normally used to do. Like, I mean, because we just don't, we're not that you know, we're not that young, yeah, agile as we were.

Shawn

The plants look good, though. Yeah, they're not gonna be dead like you're just gonna kill them. I wasn't killing them. You was too.

G

I was just eliminating them. You were killing them. You already killed, you already sprayed some of them. Oh, yeah, I killed some of them. Yeah, yeah. I killed like half, probably half the uh black-eyed Susan that you took. Yeah. I killed them. I know you did. Those are all just killed.

Shawn

That's what I said. I came over and I sprayed them, just killed them. I came over and and I saved them. You saved the ones that were still alive. Now the shit will be growing all like crazy over at my house.

G

I'm telling you right now, they're gonna go everywhere. Those things are the most jumpiness plants, like they're a bunch of hoes. Any any flower bed, they're getting in bed with you. Getting in bed with me, they ain't getting in bed with me. In whatever bed. Oh, you mean the bed, the flower bed? The flower bed. Yeah, they're a bunch of hoes. Now, yeah, but they should be called black eye hoes. Do deer eat them? I have no idea. You think I got deer?

Shawn

No, I was just wondering. Yeah, well, everybody, it's Ohio, dude.

G

You got deer everywhere. In in 26 years of living here, it's funny that you say that. Like, because I'm on the lake and how we're kind of like located in here, and there's not really any forest close to us and all that stuff. I've had I woke up one time at four deer in my yard.

Shawn

Really?

G

One time.

Shawn

You know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna go down to that weed and feed. And I they have that that meal for deer. Deer lick. Yeah. No, no, no, no, no. They have like that, that, the feed for deer. Right, right. And then you're gonna pour it in my yard? Yeah, when you guys, when you guys are gone, I'm gonna just dump a whole pile of that shit in the backyard. Why don't I just pour it in the bed, my bed, flower beds in the back. No, I'm gonna pour it in the backyard and all the neighbors will be like, what the fuck are you doing, Sean?

G

You know what? I just thought of something. This is the craziest thing. Now, some people are not gonna like this story. I'm gonna forewarn you. This is censor this story right now. When I first moved in here, there was nothing but fields. There was fields everywhere. And my biggest problem was because I was planting all this new stuff. I was finding new flowers and bushes and all that stuff. And my biggest problem were those goddamn rabbits. And dude, I was popping rabbits all over the place. You were shooting them? Oh, yeah. Dead rabbits. There's lots of dead rabbit graves around this place. You're a bunny killer. And now I'm ripping all the bushes that they were eating out. You're horrible, man. See, plant killer.

Shawn

Plant killer and bunny killer.

G

Yeah.

Shawn

Dude, we have so many. They're still around. That shit was funny, though. I'm thinking about that. I could, I, I, that would be funny. If I took some of that shit and just dumped it in your backyard, you'd have like a herd. Oh, well, dude.

G

It was a I I am like, I'm not afraid to kill I'm not afraid to kill an animal.

Shawn

I'm telling you right now. You can have animal. You can hide a bunny. You can have a hard time hiding a buck.

G

Dude, I get dude. I'd throw those things, I'd bury them, I'd throw them in the trash, I'd throw some in the lake. I'm like, I didn't care. Like, I was just get out of here, you stupid barbarian.

Shawn

We better get back to some airline shit, man. Next thing you know, you can get it. We just lost a thousand. Right, you're gonna have PETA coming after you. Bunny killer, right? They'll be like PETA. Thanks for a lot, Sean. There you go, you little bunny killer.

G

Yeah.

Pilot Duty Limits Versus Cabin Crew

Shawn

No, it okay. We gotta go back to the airline shit. So I was reading an article and they were talking about um the the flight the pilots actually do do do limitations. They had a flight, and these guys were just What did you say?

SPEAKER_02

Duty limit limitations.

Shawn

Sound like you said do do limitations. It didn't sound like do-do do limitation. Uh play it back. The pilots actually do do do limitations. So let's say duty limitations.

G

Yeah, okay.

Shawn

Now you feel better.

G

No, I just want to know what people might think if you're talking about them taking a dump or them working.

Shawn

Oh God, you're such a pilots actually do do do limitations. Duty limitations. The pilots' duty limitations. Right? So what happened was the flight was like three minutes from taking off and they exceeded the limitations. Oh yeah. What happens? Fine. What happens though? What happens to that flight? They haven't they haven't taken off yet. Oh, you I thought you just said that it was three minutes from taking off, right?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, three minutes from taking off, like before they got to end the runway and taking off.

G

And then and they exceeded it before they took off. Yeah. The plane says they get to the runway and it says, excuse me, but I need to taxi back to the gate. Yeah.

Shawn

Yeah. And that's exactly what they did. And see, this is the part a lot of a lot of passengers don't understand, right? Yep. They don't understand why can't you extend? Why can't you do that? Why can't they do that?

unknown

Dude.

Shawn

What happens to them? I mean, you know more than anybody.

G

I know, but what you what happens to them? They'll lose their freaking license, dude. They'll let they'll get fined. There's a whole bunch of repercussions that happen. And here's the other thing it's not just the company, it's the FAA, they're gonna get like NASA involved with it. There's all kinds of stuff that happens to them. There's it's pretty it's a huge deal. And why is it?

Shawn

Because there's rules. Well, is there rules though? That's what I'm saying. I'm gonna explain to them why they're rules because they they have to have so much rest.

G

Yeah.

Shawn

Right? That I mean it comes down to rest, safety of flight.

G

Yeah, we everybody in the airline industry has rules for rest, right? Ours are different than theirs, right? So they're theirs is marked by from takeoff to landing type of thing. Like they so minutes. That that's so if they don't have, if they're not rolling down the runway, they're not going. Yeah. Okay. But for the flight attendants, our measurement is the door, right? Yeah. So when you open and close the door. So it's it's it's it's wild how they're like two different things, but that's the industry.

Shawn

And nobody wants nobody wants to leave anybody at three o'clock in the morning. They don't they honestly they don't want they're already out there, they're ready to take off. But if it exceeds duty limitations, they can't because they have to turn back around. Because at at that point, they're in trouble.

G

Oh, yeah.

Shawn

Right? They and they get in a lot of trouble. And their license, everything. Yeah, their whole career's on the line if they're just so I mean, and these pilots, and and a lot of people were yelling and screaming, they didn't understand why they had taxied out, they were out the runway. They were right. We were ready. We were all ready. Why didn't we take off? And they don't understand you have to be airborne.

G

Yeah.

Shawn

Because if you're not airborne, you turn around and you go right back. Now, that's the same thing with the flight attendants, right? Yep. If the flight attendants aren't airborne, no, it's not airborne. Ours is the door. The door. Yeah. Right. That's the difference, isn't it? Yeah.

G

With the pilots. We can start boarding a plane. It's the same type of the situation. We can start boarding a plane. If they don't get it boarded quick enough for us to close the door on time for our duty limitations, what happens?

Shawn

See, that's that's the part that I want to explain. John Right. That's the part that I want to explain. The difference between the pilots and with the flight attendants. Okay. The the pilots, and that's why I was asking you. The pilots, it's airborne.

G

Yeah.

Shawn

And the flight attendants door close. Right. So if the door is open, flight attendants go illegal. By one minute, door stays open, and the flight attendants are not legal. It could be deplaning, put another crew, it could be cancellation, anything. But again, it's the flight attendants legality. And that's why I just want to bring clarity in how it works with the pilots and what works with the flight attendants. Because this plane, it was like three o'clock in the morning, and all these people didn't understand why they just didn't take off. They were all ready to go. And that's the difference. If it would have been the flight attendants, they would have just taken off because the pilots would have been fine. Okay. But since it was the pilots, the plane goes back and it cancels. And there's there's no way around it.

G

Yeah. I don't know if it I mean most of the time it cancels. There are sometimes they get replaced, whatever, but you know, rare that's a rare occasion when they have like pilots to replace those pilots type thing. Especially three o'clock in the morning. There's no way. Yeah, yeah.

Shawn

And you're an out station or you're something like that. And and there's so many things that go wrong because of hotels and everything. People just don't understand.

G

Yeah. We just got rules, period.

Shawn

They don't understand. But I mean, they they had this incident just happen, and I wanted to address it because a lot of people don't understand the legalities with the pilots compared to the flight attendants. Yeah.

Kids Learn Airline Rules Through Roleplay

Shawn

One of the cool things though, I've seen this video, and this guy he does these educational uh videos with these kids and he teaches them to ride. Is that freaking cool?

G

It's awesome. Man, I'm yeah, I wish we could like show you the whole video. The video's long. Right. But he's like literally, he's taking a whole school class and they put him on the plane, and then he's showing them basically how not to behave on a plane. Yeah, it was really cool. Yeah, and so he's he and the flight attendant are doing this little scenario interaction, and he's being, you know, these this totally objectable uh passenger that won't, you know, abide by the rules. And so he's going through all the different points. Yeah, you know, like he's checking all the boxes, yeah, all the all the boxes, and then afterwards, then he has a little brief with all the kids and they go around. What was I doing wrong? Why was it wrong? Right. These are the rules. These are this is how we have to we have to get to playing to do this. You know, you can't interfere with the crew, all this stuff.

Shawn

It was really cool. And and the great thing about it is that it's not just this video, okay? This guy does all kinds of stuff with kids. Oh, yeah. Yeah, and and and what it is is is it's the way that we they they should act. I didn't investigate into who this guy is and everything, but um, did you at all? Uh uh just a little bit. His his his I think his last name is King. Okay. I think it was something King, but you gotta watch this.

G

I mean, when you guys not ask him like what his name is. I just want to know, like, what like is he is he a teacher? Is does he is he doing like you know, big brother, big sister? Something like that. Like he is it like what type of organization is he with?

Shawn

It's more like a self-education guy. You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, yeah. He goes around, he does this for um for young younger the younger kids, and that's exactly what it's for. It's it's actually to educate them. Right. He'll he'll show them even um like garbage workers. Yeah, you know, why you know how hard it is for a sanitation.

G

What was so impressive in that whole video was one thing to me that was like just stood out. Did you know what it was?

Shawn

There was I I watched the whole thing, but go ahead.

G

I I mean the biggest thing to me that was impressive, the kids would answer and they would be like, What? Yes, sir.

Shawn

Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah. And but he was okay, okay. You being from the military. Right. Did he seem like he was from the military?

G

No, no, no.

Shawn

You didn't you didn't think so?

G

No.

Shawn

I thought I thought he seemed like he was a little bit from the military, but he's not, not at all. Not I mean, and and what it is is No, he looked like he was just a really good teacher.

G

Yeah. That's what it is. Yeah, that's why I was trying to figure out like what is this organization? Is he tied in with somebody? I gotta, I gotta step into this a little bit more because if he does this with other things like that, that would be interesting. Because I've I've one advocate for everybody out there, especially flight attendants, like we have a lot of downtime. How many times in our career, like in the ebb and flow of our career, right? When we were single in the beginning and all this stuff, how much time, like, is there time where we have like a lot of time? No, yeah, a lot of personal time. Oh, yeah. Yeah, and so I would get to these points where it wasn't that I wasn't working, like I'd work enough to get what I wanted to be paid and all that stuff, but then I had all this extra time, and I was like, you know what? People, especially in the flight engineers industry, volunteer for shit. Yeah, like go out there and find an organization local. Like I'm on a I'm on a board right now, I'm with a charity that I've been working with them for like I think almost 20 years now. Yeah, and uh, but just like this guy, you know, I don't know what it is, but whatever it is, find some time in your life to. Do something that's a positive energy for the community. Yeah. You know what I mean? So I I I just that's what I kind of like took away from this whole thing. I but it was really cool video.

Shawn

Well, you know, when I when I was watching it, I I couldn't stop. You know what I mean? I I wanted to I I wanted to watch the whole thing.

G

Right.

Shawn

And you know, you just want to see where he was going from it. So and then I started watching some other videos, and I'm like, this guy's really cool.

G

Yeah, it took me a little while to figure out that this was an educational video. Yeah. If you guys if you guys they were doing a good job of role-playing at at the very beginning, right.

Shawn

At the very beginning. Because you you really didn't understand it. But you know, I I knew a little bit about him because I watched some other videos with him in there. And um, you know, I was so impressed with how he was educating these kids. Yeah. Because a lot of a lot of people don't take the time to educate them on how to behave and how to react. Did you did you notice one thing? Not one of those kids had headphones on. Oh no. Nothing, no distress.

G

It was like they were in class. Like it was like they were that's why I was like, I want to know more about this guy, like a little dive into it a little bit, because it was as if they were there for the education purpose of it. You know, the whole intention is there. But it was the it was a really cool thing.

Shawn

Now, when you're when you're talking about the downtime, a lot of times when we see a bunch of different videos, you know, I mean you're you're looking at funny videos and stuff like that. I was drawn to this one. Yeah. I mean, I was quickly drawn to that, and a lot of times you you're you're bored after a few seconds of the video. This one, man, it just I it just kept rolling. But

Earthquake Clips And Manila Flashbacks

Shawn

now talking about kids, first day of school. Did you see that on June 8th? Did you see the um the Philippines? Philippines. Yeah. Did you see that the videos of those? I was watching those videos, man. They have seven point eight? 7.8 earthquake. Yeah. I've never have you been in earthquake? Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. No, I was in California.

G

I was actually in the in the Marriott when whenever they had uh a bad I have like I grew up in California first 13 years of my life, and there was earthquakes out there and all this stuff, but I've never, ever, ever experienced a fur earthquake where I like it was like, I know I'm in an earthquake. Like there's been rumblers, a trembler, it's happening. I'm moving around, I can't tell what's going on. This was for real. Like ground was opening up, cracking, buildings are falling down.

Shawn

These kids had just started school.

G

Yeah.

Shawn

And and not only that, though, a lot of those, a lot of those islands, tsunamis.

G

Oh, yeah, the tsunami of uh that's what I was thinking about when we ever when I watched the whole video. I was thinking, this is just the start. Yeah. Right? Yeah. So I'm sure they were having tsunami warnings, especially with that big of an earthquake.

Shawn

Years ago, years ago, um, back in the early 80s, I went into I went to the Philippines. I used to fly in and out of Manila. And do you remember the Marcos, the amount of Marcos? So um it kind of takes you back. I mean, you know, even with the the earthquake, and I I started thinking, man, when I used to go in and out of the Manila Hotel, the Marcos's they they had um, you know, they have a lot of um uh historical things. She had 3,000. I remember no, I went I went and seen the they didn't have 3,000 on display, yeah. But the the exhibit I think was like of all our shoes. At least a thousand of them. I mean, but she supposedly reportedly had over three thousand pairs of shoes.

G

What in the hell you're gonna do it? Outside of them scamming and getting in trouble and all that, you know, the Marcos and all the the thing was the shoes. Yeah.

Shawn

It was uh the Philippines was m one of the most gut-wrenching places back then whenever I was flying. Um why? Because the kids. I mean, you know, you go downtown you go downtown area and there's these kids um no money begging on the sides of the sides of the road. Poverty. Yeah, it's so bad. It was so bad. And and you know, you walk by and these kids were eating stuff out of like piles of just crap, you know. And it just broke your heart. Because, you know, a few dollars to them back then, I mean, it it was it it would go a long way, especially our money. It would go a long way a long way. I used to I used to take five dollars and I would give it to one of the vendors, and they I would never give money to the kids because they would run back and give it to their family. Right. Okay, but what I did is I paid one of the vendors to cook all this rice, and then kids would come up with like their cans and everything. They'd they'd you know dip it in there. But it was only five dollars. But back then, I think it was like exchanger, it was like 40 to one. It was ridiculous how much how much uh it's still good.

G

Yeah. It's you know, it's it's that's one of the uh like one of the most I'd say poorest regions of the world. Have you ever been? I have never been there. I've wanted to because it's beautiful, yeah.

Shawn

It's beautiful. They they filmed um Apocalypse Now there. Did you know that? It was out. I took a Jeepney out that that thing, and it was like uh it they all they did were back up, man. What? Whatever you just said, I don't know what you just said. A gypney. A gypney. Have you ever seen No? I have no idea. A gypny.

G

I thought you just I thought you were having a moment there or something. Yeah, yeah, like something's wrong. What's happening? Yeah, yeah. I was like, are you okay?

Shawn

He's are you okay? Yeah, exactly. Don't do it. No, it's gymney. Okay, and what it is, it it's like it's it's like this little transportation bus with the windows out of it. Gotcha. Okay. So gymney. People listen to that. That's how they said it. You're like, go ahead. What was this? One day, what the heck it was. He's like, yeah, having a stroke. It was carrying all that shit from your backyard. You slurring a lot of words today. Shut up. The pilots actually do do do limitations. So but anyway, we took it, we took it out there and and you got into these little fing canoes, and you go through this. It looked like you were back in Vietnam.

G

Yeah.

Shawn

I mean, you you're going through and all of a sudden it just opened up. Remember Apocalypse now, they were driving the Ricefield.

G

Yeah.

Shawn

But but you know when they were driving the the gunboats down through there, and it's like all open. That's what happened. I mean, so you're going through all this this shit, and all of a sudden it just opens up into this waterway. And I'm like, how in the hell we get back now? Yeah. Because you get just got all this, you know, freaking groves and shit in there. But it is absolutely gorgeous on the outside of the Philippines. The city's a little bit for me and you back in then, the city would have been was fun. Right. If me and you would have been hanging out, if we'd have been together in Manila, the red light district. Dude, red light district back then was crazy. It was I I can't even begin to tell you, man. It was nuts. That's a different episode. Yeah. I don't even know if we can go there. So, what's been going on with you? We better go somewhere else because we're gonna start talking about bad things.

G

So

Gate Snoring Story And Old Classmate

G

you're talking about traveling and all this stuff, right? So listen to this. I'm going to work the other day, and um, I'm at the gate, and I get to, you know, here at Cleveland, I get at the gate, I'm getting ready to do my little commuter flight over there, and I sit down right at the like closest seat next to the gate. And this dude is sitting right next to me, and all of a sudden he's like like he's like loud. I can't even do it as loud as this dude doing, but he was like loud, and he was just sitting right there in the gate, and I'm like, dude. I'm like, wow.

Shawn

You want to help him out? You want to tip his head back a little bit?

G

Dude, I was just like, I was just like, damn, dude, you got some serious sleep apnea doing going on. You need to get you know, get that checked out. He's single, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I get my ass on the plane, who's sitting right behind me? Right next to him. No, right behind me. Oh right here. Snore, snore. Dude, it was so loud, everybody on the plane, okay, is like laughing because it's so loud. But he's just like just going at it.

SPEAKER_02

Like you're like, you're like, whoa. So then we land, hit, boom, get to the gate, half the plane is off, we get to my road. He's still there. He's still sitting there snoring.

G

I'm like, dude, you got a serious problem. So then I like get up and I'm getting ready to go. I'm like, I can't leave this too bad. So I go over there and I I like give him a gentle pat. He doesn't even move. I'm like, boom, boom. He's like, he's like, huh. Did I miss something? What did I miss? I'm like, you're almost missing your destination. You gotta get off here. Everybody's leaving. Oh, thank you, thank you. It was, it was, I was like, wow, wow. I mean, to be like that deep in the sleep, and he it was like every time he was like sat still, like, you're actually doing a good imitation of it. Had to like deep reach deep down and get that. Anyways, it was crazy, and I was like, wow, this is some some some crazy stuff. But then cool thing happened on my trip was I ran into a classmate. When was the last time you ran into a classmate? This morning I ran into Chris. Okay. But a classmate you haven't seen. No, I haven't. I have one classmate here. Gary's my classmate here in Cleveland.

Shawn

Gary, listen, if you see Gary in the airport, that's kind of like an unicorn.

G

Yeah, that's a unicorn. That's unicorn.

Shawn

You ain't seen Gary.

G

But this gal, I hadn't seen her in 36 years. Really? And all of a sudden, boom, she picks up the trip. Now, did you did you recognize her? I didn't. Really? So I as soon as I saw her, I recognized her. I didn't recognize the name. Yeah. Because I'm looking at, well, what was happening was, you know, we're doing a crew rest, and I'm looking at my crew rest. And so I'm always looking to see, am I senior? I'm the senior half, so I can have the second crew rest.

Shawn

You remembered her after 36 years. Yeah. Shit. I couldn't remember. I went to school with people, and when I went to the reunion, I couldn't remember the rest.

G

Yeah, no, I'm I'm I'm very good with faces, names, not so much, but faces I can be like, boom. Oh yeah, you're in my class. Anyhow, but I knew her name because uh sweet, sweet ass cow. Shout out to Catherine if you're watching. Um, but yeah, so she she got on the trip and it was wonderful, it was awesome, got to recap, but she connected with like all these people in our class and still keeps in contact with all these people. Do you keep in talking about time? Do you keep in contact with anybody else in your class? Chris. No, I said anybody else but Chris. No, I don't. That's why I told you. Can you tell me any other people names out of your class?

Shawn

Like oh yeah, Gannon. Oh, Ganon was in your face. Yeah, Sharice is in the class. All right.

G

So you have no you have a handful that's here that's been around for a while.

Shawn

Redmond.

G

Redmond's in your class.

Shawn

Oh, she was. I'm sorry. Yeah, I know. I know, yeah. She's still here. So Redmond, but yeah, she's still here.

G

So it was a good time. We went out to we went out on a layover and had some drinks and did all the you know bonding again, catching up and all that stuff. And the craziest thing is that she married a pilot and I married a pilot. She goes, Do you think after the all this time it'd be like sitting here having a conversation about we both married pilots?

Shawn

You know something? Your your pilot's a little different, though.

G

You got that right.

Shawn

Than her pilot.

G

A little different.

Shawn

A little different.

G

A little different.

Shawn

Yeah. Yeah.

G

My female pilot that I am married to.

Shawn

Which is, first of all, I am no Carol's one of the best pilots, man.

G

Do you know anybody else in the whole system? Like I have never ran into one person. I think I take that back. You know who was married to a pilot that we both know back in the day? That there's the only other male that was flight agent that I knew was married to a pilot. It's gonna bring you back in memories.

Shawn

It was US Air. I remember one from US Air, Herman.

G

You ain't nothing but a haircut, brother.

Shawn

But Herman got Herman got Herman got cut. Yeah, got cut. He got cut.

G

Yeah.

Shawn

Because he was doing shit he shit wasn't supposed to be.

G

He got caught doing stuff just by accident. By accident. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Right? He was the only person I ever met that was in male and married.

Shawn

That was um his wife was uh what USC there, yeah, yeah. I remember that.

G

Yeah, that was that's crazy.

Shawn

But that's only you know of any other? We didn't have well, come on. We did not have when we were young. How many female pilots do we have? Carol was the only one. That was about over 10 years. That was about it. Yeah. Now they're flooded. They're everywhere. They're everywhere.

G

Yeah, there's young ones everywhere. Yeah. But I still haven't seen a flight attendant with a female pilot.

Shawn

No. Because they you know, the the the the pilots back then they looked like your third grade teacher. Right. And our third grade teachers. They look like they now come on now. You know, you know, they they don't look anything like the pilots do today. No, no, no, no.

SPEAKER_02

They don't have some hot pilots out there. I know that.

Shawn

That's why I said they they they don't look like that. They did not look like that. Nope.

G

But you know, anyways.

East Coast Passengers And Hazard Pay Jokes

G

Other thing that happened on my trip, this is crazy. You ever had that like group of people where you're just like, you motherfuckers? That's all I wanted to say to all of them. You motherfuckers, shut up. But leave me alone. No, no, I had this group of pastors coming back, and we were going back to Newark, okay? And they were all New Yorkers, yeah. Just obnoxious, loud, needy, impatient. Yeah, like just walking over, didn't care about the next person sitting next to them, just like it was just that whole vibe. And I hate that whole, like, you know.

Shawn

But you gotta okay, wait a minute now. Wait a minute. You're you are based in on the east coast, right? Now you know the one thing. The one thing, listen, hold on a second. Go ahead, go ahead. The the one thing, if when as soon as you take your ass and you get on an airplane and you go to the east coast, the number one thing that you gotta do is bring your east coast. Oh, yeah. You bring you gotta turn, you gotta turn your east coast attitude on. Now we might come from the Midwest say, hey, how you doing? Welcome on board. My name is Gary, my name is Sean, welcome on board, right? You don't do that on the East Coast.

G

No, you know, you gotta you gotta be a little tougher on the East Coast. Yeah, a little bit. You're thick, but this but this problem was just like thick. As soon as they got on, they were under my skin, and I was like, oh my God, this is gonna be a long flight. And then I ran into this couple, they're married 53 years, and they were a typical couple, a New Yorker. So I go there, I'm getting trying to get their meal orders, right? One of my jobs. I gotta get the meal orders before we take off so we can get everybody set. I got 24 people on my section. What do you have? Right, right, right. What do you have?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, oh, what do you have? Oh, um Marge, did you see, did you see what they have here? Um, hey, what kind of sauce do you have?

SPEAKER_00

No, is it tomato sauce? The wine, yeah. Um, yeah. Is it real tomato sauce? Is it a little bit more than a few?

G

Here's the three entrees. One of those.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, let me see. Did I tell you what type of wine I want?

Shawn

Edmund, I said coffee. I want some coffee. I'm regular. I wanted regular coffee, and this guy gives me black coffee. It was unbelievable, man. Don't you love that? Unbelievable. It was so East Coast, the one thing is regular, right? Yeah. Regular coffee. What's regular coffee?

G

Who knows? I know. Everybody's regular, different. Everybody's regular is different. People don't know. Cream is one thing. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Cream, cream, and three sugars. Three sugars. I need two creams, five sugars.

Shawn

Yeah. That's regular. That's what I want.

G

Yeah. And some juice. Yeah.

Shawn

And maybe some huggling water, too. Do you have that one flavored cow? But you have to get your East Coast on.

G

And then right after he says that, he says, Did she tell you what type of wine she wants?

Shawn

Yeah. I'm like, don't even go there.

G

Dude. I'm like, all right.

Shawn

Yeah. Please. She will tell you. Yeah. And then they they got to answer each other too.

G

Every time I came to the seat, they would be like, when do I tell you what type of wine I want? I was like, oh my God, I want to smack these people right now. I just want to take them out. Yeah. Take them out. But you expect it though.

Shawn

I mean, that's like doing okay, wait. That's like doing West Palm, right? Yeah. I mean, if you're if you're going Newark, West Palm. I don't do West Palm. You should get double. You should get double, you should get double pay.

G

Yeah.

Shawn

You should get double pay. Anybody that does Newark, West Palm. Yeah. And if you're doing a turn, double time and a half. Yeah. Double time and a half. Certain destinations should have hazard pay. Exactly. Newark West Palm is it, man. Definitely.

G

Speaking about hazard

Traveler’s Diarrhea And Food Adventures

G

pay. Dude, you want to know one of my biggest challenges being an international flight attendant?

Shawn

No. Go ahead. Your nap time? I don't know. Traveler's diarrhea. Wait a minute. Traveler's diarrhea. You mean like other travelers, passengers? No. Yours? Yes. Oh, for God's sake.

G

So traveler's diarrhea is a real thing. This is a thing that what when you go to different countries and you eat their shit or all that stuff. Mexico, they call it Montezuma's revenge. And anywhere else in the world, traveler's diarrhea. And dude, I have been getting hit by this every week I go. So I come back and like I got two or three days to like flush it out. Really? It's like killing me. Yeah, I haven't had that problem. Yeah, because you don't go anywhere. You don't get that from Florida.

Shawn

I'm regular. I'm regular, man. There's no but you listen to the you brought some badass cookies home.

G

Yes, dude.

Shawn

Those were some, those were some good ass cookies.

G

Yeah. Listen, all listen, all the food over there, I love like, you know, me, I'm foodie. So I want to like dive into it and all this stuff. And I'm trying everything. But dude, by the time I get home, I am paying for it.

Shawn

Well, some of the shit that you eat, I can understand. Well, you know, when can you get fresh eel? I that's exactly what I'm saying. You wonder why you're shitting. Because because you're eating you're eating fresh eel. The dude just chopped it up right in front of you.

G

Like, I mean, when can you get fresh sperm?

Shawn

Sperm. Really? No wonder, no wonder your stomach's all jacked up.

G

Dude, I have a like I had I eat. So speaking about the sperm. Oh, I talked to this gal the other day and I was like telling her the story, and she's like, I love that. And she was like, it's you know, she goes, Do you know it's only like you it's like a special thing to be able to get it?

Shawn

And I was like, You can have it. And then I I even got to tell you this, and you guys listen up, you guys have got Aldi's. Chris turned me on to this freaking Ahi Tuna.

G

She goes, she texted. Do you know Chris texted me, been texting me for years? Did she tell you about the ahi tuna? Yes, she's texted me. Okay, everybody. Have you had it? Have you had it? Yes, dude, for years. Me and Chris had this connection for years.

Shawn

No, no, this ahi tuna steak because she it's never been there before. Yes, for years. This it comes and goes. Okay. Anyway, so you're late to the show. Shut up. This ahi tuna. Your friend out of your class been holding out. That thing is unbelievable. I know. I heated that thing up, had some asparagus with it today. That shit was crazy. I know, and and it aldies is cheap. It was seared ahi tuna, and it was like a damn steak. I know. It tasted like a steak.

G

Dude, I am like, listen, so I'm hooked. If I had my phone right here and it'd be able to show you, but Chris literally goes, she'll text me and she'll be like, Ahie. That's all she texts me. I know that she's saying ahie's at all.

Shawn

Well, I'm gonna tell her ask tomorrow because I'm flying with her tomorrow because that's bullshit. Because I thought it was, I thought it was gonna I thought I was gonna surprise you. I'm like, I gotta tell him about this ahi too. No, no, no. You're late to the show. Shut up. Bullshit. I'm gonna talk to Chris tomorrow. When people like some friend. When people like you, then they tell you good stuff. I don't tell you nothing. No,

College Baseball Joy And Painful Viral Clip

Shawn

but anyway, the baseball, the the World Series was going on, right? World Series? The the base uh the college world series.

G

Okay.

Shawn

Okay, so I like watching, I was watching the video and they had no, I know, but they had Georgia and uh Oklahoma playing against each other. Two of the brothers were playing. One one of the videos was cool. Last at bat, you know how much I love baseball. Last at bat for one of the brothers playing for Georgia. His family's watching, his little brother is playing second base. He for the opposite team. Yeah. Well, it's for Oklahoma. That's what I said. One's playing for Oklahoma, one's playing for Georgia.

G

That's what I'm trying to clarify.

Shawn

I said one is playing for Oklahoma and one's playing for Georgia. Two different teams. Everybody out there, you heard it. Shut up. The pilots actually do do limitations. I said shut up for you like four times. It's kind of it just flows out of my mouth anymore. But no, anyway. This kid hits a home run. But the best part of this, best part, was the game stopped for a minute, and this and his brother was like, Yeah. And he had this big smile. Now, the Oklahoma won. Right. And Georgia lost. Right. But for that moment, it was so cool.

G

Yeah, because it was his last bat at batch. He hits this home run. And his brother's expression's expression was like and he's like, oh happy. He was like looking and the announcers are happy, like, look at his expression.

Shawn

He was like looking at that, and everybody was talking about it as expression. And he was looking up for his mom and dad, like, do you see, you know, do you see him? He just hit a home run, right?

G

It was so freaking cool. And then the but the coolest part is that he's running the bases. They give him, he gave him the little fist bump around the bases, yeah.

Shawn

And that that was, I mean, I love that. I love the game. But one part that you didn't want to go viral in was the other video. Oh, yeah. This is hilarious. The other video. Kid hits a home run. And how do you catch a ball, Sean? You catch a ball with your glove up.

G

This way. Like this. Like this. You don't scoop it. You don't scoop it. Because when a ball hits and it hits, it goes right at you.

Shawn

As you see in the video, the the ball hits right between his legs. Yeah. He got nutted. He got nutted. And then he rolled. He went down like a damn rock, like any normal man would do, right? He was like, and you went, you went viral. Could you imagine this kid like 30 20 years from now? He's like, uh Dad, Dad uh went viral one time.

G

He didn't be sitting around and be like, yeah, that's how I like testicle.

Shawn

I learned how to catch sickness, too.

G

I left a testicle and left the film.

Shawn

It's so bad, man. He didn't even write the nuts. It was it was so bad. So, okay,

Japan Airline Alcohol Fallout And Accountability

Shawn

we're gonna go around the globe now. Yeah. All right. So the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau issued a stern warning recently to the airline uh it was a failure to um for the safe for safety management system. And what that was was one of their flight or two of their flight attendants actually um they before the flight they tested positive and they they were over their legal, they were over the limit of what the company's drinking limit. Yeah. Okay. Just call it what it is. Well, they're they're over the limit. Right. And but he was 2.6% over the limit, and the other the younger one was right at the limit, and she had taken herself off as being unfit to fly. Right. Okay, so they had to go replace them. The point that I loved about this. So let's listen to the repercussions, and then you tell me if you're the other flight attendant that doesn't get fired, would you come back to the job? Okay? Let's say if you were at the limits, yeah. Okay. So the cheap purser, the one that that was 2.6, got fired. It's gonna happen, right? Sure. Shouldn't you you're not drinking, you're gonna get fired. The CEO um announced that she would take a 30% pay cut for two months. The CEO? The CEO, because and they're responsible, right? Okay. Okay. So You think Okay, I'm just all I'm asking you to do is just do one thing, right? Just absorb this and then tell me if you're this other flight attendant. Okay. The head of in flight, which is responsible for all the flight attendants, took a 20% pay cut for one month.

G

Okay.

Shawn

All other directors took a 10% pay cut for a month. All right. All right. And all 6,000 flight attendants were banned from ever consuming alcohol and layovers effective immediately. Now. Yeah. Are you coming? Uh here's my badge. Are you coming back to work? Yeah. Hell no. You the reason why we ain't drinking? The CEO had to take a pay cut for two months. So she lost she lost more money than you're gonna make in your career.

G

This is something so much about Japan, though. Like, Japan is like, they're so like service-oriented and they're like excellence and all this was service, and their leadership takes responsibility from the top down, like for the for instance that humiliated the airline type of thing. You know, like like you think any one of our American companies would do that? Dude, let me tell you something. That an American CEO? I'm not talking about that airline, I'm talking about a US carrier CEO taking a pay cut because I came to work drunk.

Shawn

Could you see a flight attendant staying? Could you see she was sitting there thinking, well, maybe they wouldn't notice. 6,000 of them don't get to drink sake? Oh my gosh. There ain't no way in hell you're coming back to work.

G

Dude, there's no way in hell that yeah. You just had your ID in. First of all, like but in Japan, like your whole family's now humiliated. That's what I said. Everybody, everybody in her whole entire family knows knows that it was you is gonna be humiliated and and yeah. I mean, it's it's only the country's airline.

unknown

Wow.

G

Yeah. Repercussions over there are serious.

Shawn

Serious repercussions. Here you go to rehab there. You go, you go move out to like a you go to rehab, and the CEO don't know about that shit at all. No, hell no. But but over there, you go live in some little province over in this some little area that nobody even knows who your family was.

G

In that little canoe you're talking about, and you go and they send you downriver.

Shawn

Paddling my ass and cross to the other side, man.

G

You're going to those bushes back in. Exactly. All right. So, inspirational quote. You got this one. Inspirational quote. Okay, so success is not final. Failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.

Shawn

Do you think she has the courage to continue? Her ass ain't continuing. I don't care how much courage you got. I don't care with phones today. If you okay, just let's just end it with this. If phones today and you were on a US carrier and you did that, could you imagine your mugshot be like this? Yeah. It would be on every phone in

Quote, Support Plug, And Goodbye

Shawn

America. In America. Who's responsible for all the flight attendants not drinking?

G

Right. Can you imagine that? That's unbelievable.

Shawn

Could you imagine even with yeah, but could you imagine like ours? Yeah. And then all of a sudden, this person that they come out and they said, you're not allowed to drink on layovers because of this person. That's worse than even that prison thing.

G

You know, like committing the crime and showing that slapping on the ass or everything.

Shawn

Here's my badge. Here's my badge. I'm heading over to Walmart. And next week I'm gonna show you a picture of Walmart. Right. Oh that was a little scary. Anyway, you guys uh we had a lot of fun.
